Elephant Kashimashi might not be well-known worldwide, but it’s definitely one of the most famous bands in Japan. They debuted in 1988 and have been active for over 35 years, releasing more than 50 singles and over 20 albums. Most of their songs are written by the frontman, vocalist, and guitarist, Hiroji Miyamoto. When they first debuted, they were seen as promising newcomers – but their records didn’t sell at all. In fact, starting with their second album, they released music that completely ignored the trends of Japan’s hit charts. At that time, Elephant Kashimashi (especially Miyamoto) weren’t just talented songwriters-they were revolutionaries in Japanese music. They expanded and redefined the world of Japanese rock music, creating something truly unique, but were totally isolated from the mainstream scene. While they were admired by a handful of hardcore fans, it wasn’t until eight years after their debut, when they switched record labels-that they finally started to sell. Personally, I love their early albums – especially the second through the fifth, which I think have this “quiet” Tokyo vibe. Living in Japan, I often hear that anime songs and ’80s city pop are really popular overseas. Compared to that, Elephant Kashimashi’s music might not really click with international listeners. But if you ever get the chance, I’d like you to take a moment to enjoy it – lyrics and all. I think it gives a glimpse into a different side of Japanese sensibility. In Japanese.
