Mt.Moiwa

Sapporo is a lively city with a population of around 2 million, but it’s also surrounded by lots of beautiful nature. One of the most popular natural spots for both locals and visitors is Mt. Moiwa. This mountain is loved by people in Sapporo and the surrounding areas because it’s an easy and accessible place to hike. While there’s a ropeway that takes you right to the top, let’s check out the most popular of the five hiking routes―the “Jikeikai Hospital Trailhead Course.”

If you’re planning to hike Mt. Moiwa while in Sapporo, here’s how to get started. First, take the Tozai Subway Line to Maruyama Koen Station. After you exiting the ticket gates, head to the bus terminal and hop on a bus bound for the Jikeikai Hospital bus stop. Since the bus follows a circular route, it might take a little while, but don’t worry, you’ll get there eventually. Once you get off, it’s just a 2-minute walk to the trailhead, where your hike officially begins.

Your adventure begins at Maruyama Koen Station!

Let’s go find the bus stop.

Here’s the sign at the trailhead.

The trail starts off easy with a gentle incline along a well-maintained path. About 15 minutes in, you’ll come across the remains of Japan’s first ski lift. The old iron foundation is still standing, making it a great spot for a short break. Another 15 minutes of hiking will bring you to a rest area called Uma no Se or “Horse’s Back,” which is also where the trail from Asahiyama Park join in. From here, the path becomes rockier and steeper as you apprpach the summit.

Arrived at Horse’s Back(Uma no se). Taking a little rest here.

Finally, you’ll reach the top! At the summit, you’ll find an observation deck, a restaurant, restrooms, vending machines, a souvenir shop, and a rest area for hikers. From the deck, you can enjoy panoramic views of central Sapporo, with lush green mountains stretching out around you. It takes a little over an hour to reach the top from the trailhead, and about an hour to come back down. Including breaks, you’ll be back at Maruyama Koen Subway Station in around four hours. Just be sure to bring all the essential hiking gear you’ll need! If you’re looking for an easier hike, Mt. Maruyama is a great choice.

See that building? That’s where we’re headed!

Awesome view of Sapporo from the top!
